COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Designed
initially as a request from many clients wanting to know more
about the recording process and the equipment we use daily,
this curriculum was conceived in 1995, and the first class
held that fall. Limited to 6-8 students per course, you are
guaranteed much "hands on" experience. We encourage
you to get in there and "get plugged in!" Many of
our workshop students have home studios of their own, and
work out of Starfields Studios for their larger projects.
Some have gone on to careers in the recording industry. References
are available upon request.
OUTLINE:
Workshop
I is designed to be a primer for the future recording engineer.
It is our first level workshop, and intended to introduce
the student to the studio environment, and recording process.
No previous studio knowledge is required, although any experience
is helpful. In ten 3 hour sessions, we cover a vast assortment
of studio related topics such as: studio design, the recording
console, signal flow, midi, sampling, mixing, an intro to
Pro Tools, mastering, and more! Upon completion, the student
should be able to set up and run basic sessions, with an assistant
available. We encourage the workshop student’s private
sessions.
OBSERVATION/INTERNSHIPS:
While enrolled in our workshop program, take advantage of
our session assistant / observation program. Upon our client’s
approval, the workshop student is invited to "sit in"
and observe actual sessions of various types and musical styles.
Often the student ends up assisting on sessions and quite
possibly earning album credits while learning! In this business,
experience often outweighs practical theory. Workshop I is
designed for you to gain both practical and real world experience
while learning and having fun!

DESCRIPTION:
Birthed
from the rather recent professional audio community acceptance
of computer audio workstations, Workshop II is designed to
delve deeper into Pro Tools and assorted support software
and hardware using the Macintosh computer platform. Combining
Pro Tools HD with other production software such as Digital
Performer, Reason, and softsynths such as Absynth, Virus,
and Atmosphere, it is clear to see that computer based music
recording and mixing is here to stay. The only pre-requisite
is Starfields Workshop I, and the ability to get around either
a Macintosh or windows based PC. Come and let us show you
how to make music the Macintosh way!
OUTLINE:
Workshop
II covers a deeper understanding of the ProTools audio recording
and mixing environment with an emphasis on hands on use. Topics
demonstrated and discussed include basic audio recording,
digital editing, mixing in ProTools, and extensive use of
various plugins, proper archive techniques, extensive use
of automation in mixing, digital transfers to and from Pro
Tools, and more. Course goals include proficiency in basic
ProTools techniques, such as recording, mixing, use of automation,
and basic mastering skills.
OBSERVATION/INTERNSHIPS:
Similar
to Workshop I, students will be given the opportunity to observe
real recording and mix sessions using Pro Tools. In some cases,
students will actually participate in tracking sessions based
upon their growing ability and desire to observe on a consistent
level.
